Anna is a local girl here in Santa Cruz who sets
a fine example in and out of the water. When she first started out surfing, she jumped right in to the contest scene and
became a regular finalist in NSSA, USSF series contests and many more. Like most surfers, she likes to travel and has
already visited Bali, Barbados, Japan, Chile, Italy, Holland, England and surfed much of the Americas. This past year
she spent a lot of her time in Costa Rica, where she this year became the womens national champion.
Vintage: 1982
What's your hometown? Santa Cruz, CA.
Where do you live? Eastside Santa Cruz.
What's your sign? Scorpio, but I don't believe in astrology.
When did you start surfing? When I was 14.
Where do you love to surf most? The Hook and a secret spot in Costa Rica.
Who taught you to surf? My sisters Heather and Shana, my brother-in-law Frog and my brother Peter. Peter still teaches me something new everytime we surf together.
Why do you love to surf? I love that I can do it with my family and friends, but I also love that I don't have to wait for anyone to go surf. It's something I can do on my own unlike any team sports I used to play. I love that the conditions are always changing and each day is different.
Describe your surf style? I try to be Smooth and progressive. I like to try to surf with power of a guy, but with grace of a girl.
If you could only take three CDs on a desert island, which would you choose? Brother Down (my brother-in-law Jordan's, band), Jack Johnson and Bob Marley.
Which board would you take? My 5'11" Spico shortboard.
Which three books? The Bible, Stepping Heavenward and anything by C.S. Lewis.
How big was the biggest wave you ever rode? It was a 10ft + day at the Hook, so somewhere around that. But the scariest waves I've surfed was only about 6-7ft at Hermosa at low tide. Very powerful and hard to duck dive. Right as I was about to paddle out one of my good friends broke her board duck diving!
What's your kookiest moment in the water? Hmmm...I've had many of those days. Probably the biggest with the most people watching was at the NSSA Nationals at Lower Trestles. It was the Open Women's Governor Cup final with around 1500 people on the beach watching. The waves were perfect 4-6ft and it was a 35 minute final and I only caught 2 waves. That was humbling experience.
Which is your favorite Betty B. Item? Layna teardrop earrings,
Lanikai handbag and the
Kia Bracelet. I like that Betty Belts is owned by a surfer and that she gives back to women's surfing. I also like that they have a super cool surf team. Also Betty Belts are a great way to dress up any outfit.
Your motto: If it were easy, everyone would be doing it. Peace and Love, Anna
