“I love shooting pictures in the ocean and capturing the beautiful place I get to live in, Santa Barbara. My most recent favorite surf adventure was a fun little road trip up to big sur. I packed up my surf board and headed up with a few of my best surfer buddies. Big Sur is one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited, the bright green trees and crystal clear water. It is an unreal experience. We surfed in perfect conditions amongst the incredible beauty.”

My passion is film and photography, I never leave home without my camera… I put all of my effort into film… I love that I get to capture the joy that surfing brings and the true beauty of the ocean.”

July Betty of the Month: Ming Hui Brown

In the peak of Summer we chose to celebrate a Betty who works hard & plays even harder in & out of the waves all day, every day. Ming Hui Brown lives that endless Summer Betty life (which is why we named our most popular wave design after her too!) We were stoked to catch up with the latest.

Here’s what she shared…

“My most recent accomplishment with surfing is being confident with my own body and knowing that my strong curvy body helps me Surf as well as I do. On a normal day off you can find me either surfing, fishing out at the Channel Islands, or playing my new favorite activity, pickle ball!”

My goals for 2020 are to finish my teaching credential and become a science teacher. I also want to get more traveling done. Specifically to Taiwan to visit my grandparents and surf, and a fun surf trip to Mexico! What really gets me stoked are great waves, great food and great company.”

On top of all this action, she’s a local role model working with Ventura Jr. Lifeguards, servicing our special needs youth & sharing Betty stoke on our socials. You’re an ace in the Betty book Ming Hui, we absolutely love love love ya!

We’re super stoked & so proud she reps Betty as she climbs the ranks in the Western Surfing Association & National Scholastic Surfing Association.

We had a fun chat to get the latest on her days this Summer. Here’s what she shared…

“My most recent fave surf adventure– a quick weekend trip to Ventura to surf super fun waves and check in with my favorite sponsor (she means Betty Belts, thanks babe!) …I’m super excited to continue competing on the QS and start college in 2020 My goals for 2020 are start traveling again to surf with my friends.

May Betty of the Month: Surfer Susie

You can’t find a Babe with more stoke than our May Betty of the Month, “Surfer Susie” Terry. A soul surfer to the core, we absolutely adore this rad water Mama.

We had a fun chat to get the latest on her days. Here’s some highlights from her seriously cool life story…

“Since I’m retired & not a professional surfer my goals are pretty simple…. Stay healthy & keep surfin’! I spent 30 plus years in the Fitness Industry, what a fantastic career, it’s definitely paid off, ha!.. Exercise is an everyday thang for me & the words ‘self motivated’ has my pic beside it. I have my limitations but I can live with that.

I got into SURFING as a result of my Aunt taking me to see the original “GIDGET” movie. I was mesmerized & inspired. I had been swimming since my Dad threw me in a pool at the age of 6 months old, spent years training & swimming on a Saticoy swim team so water was IN MY BLOOD, apparently!

Told my Mom & Dad I wanted to be a Surfer & they said OF COURSE. Gosh growing up in the the 1950’s – 1960’s was the coolest! I was one of 3 girls surfing in those days in & around Ventura. All the other girls were so jealous cuz I knew all the boys! I loved it! In my Senior year in high school I surfed everyday either before 1st period or right after school. It was just one of those I GOTTA DO THIS moments I determined myself to do. Self motivated I told you, ha! My fave board was my custom 10’2” Dewey Weber my Dad drove me to buy, right before my 16th bday. OH GOSH WISH I HAD THAT BOARD TODAY! “

Fast forward to these days…

After seeing a sea glass ring on another amazing Betty friend in the Ventura neighborhood, I said,” I GOTTA HAVE ME ONE OF THOSE!”… the very NEXT DAY I WENT SHOPPIN’ in search of this Betty Belts store & bought my own SEA GLASS RING! The rest is HISTORY!”

“Being so busy with college, work, and studying, any free surf opportunity is always an adventure. I am eternally grateful for the ocean. She moves so gracefully and provides much stoke for everyone. I am really into song writing at the moment. Music is a great way to express yourself!

My goals for 2020 are to spread more kindness and love. What gets me stoked is being out in nature. There is so much to love and appreciate outdoors. Our world is truly a piece of art.”

March Betty of the Month: Mary Osborne

Celebrating Mermaid March means our Betty of the Month had to be a total merboss. Our very first OG Surf Team Rider, Mary Osborne is exactly that. A leader in Women’s pro surf with a career spanning over two decades, passionate ocean steward, and local role model teaching and inspiring girls and women to feel their power and stoke through surfing– we absolutely LOVE this Betty!

We we’re so pumped to catch up and see where Betty life is taking her, this is what she shared…

“My surf camps and surfari escapes have been a big success over the last five years. This year [in 2020], I’m changing my Summer surf programs to the Mary Osborne Surf Academy” and [am] ready to make my camps more intimate and truly successful for each surfer. My goal is … to ensure each surfer falls in love with the sport and will truly succeed. This means a much more hands on personal experience for each student, smaller groups, safer surfing conditions and truly passionate instructors.”

“I’ve been on the road non stop from last August 2019 to Feb 2020… I was able to go work on a Melissa McCarthy film in Atlanta doing stunt work for three months. It was incredible to be a part of a movie production and learn how stunt work operates. Following the film, I hosted a retreat in El Salvador, one in Costa Rica and Mexico. As of March I will be home in Ventura hosting groups visiting Ventura County, and most likely staying home till after my summer camps this Fall.”
