Step one: Adjust the opening of cuff just enough to slide onto the slimmest edge of your ear, about upper-mid ear.

Step 2: Slide downward and forward to desired placement (see photos). Then pinch gently to tighten enough to secure the cuff in place.

Step 3: Try to slide up to test if it is tight enough. Ear cuff should not move freely or feel loose. Be mindful when getting in and out of turtlenecks, front-zip wetsuits, etc. just ensure it’s still on snugly after getting your head through.

DIY: Cayden’s Happy Harvest

Pumpkin Seed Snack

October = pumpkins

Pumpkins = pumpkin seeds

Yes, time for your favorite October tradition… carving pumpkins. But wait, don’t throw out those pumpkin seeds!

Pumpkin seeds are a great, nutritional snack. They contain a good amount of protein and fiber, plus lots of antioxidants, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and other good things your body wants and needs.

So when you’re pulling the gooey orange guts out of your pumpkin just before carving it– separate the seeds out for a bonus Halloween treat!

Place the seeds in a separate bowl as you gut your pumpkin to make things easier, then pick out the orange globs mixed with the seeds into a separate bowl. 

Once you have all the seeds in their own bowl, soak them in warm water and salt.

Now go carve your pumpkin!.. and let them sit in the water for a few hours. After carving my Summer themed pumpkin, I put on a few episodes of Friends, ate dinner, lit up my pumpkin, then strained the water from the seed bowl.

I put the seeds on a few layers of napkins to dry, then oiled a sheet pan, placed them on, seasoned the seeds, then sent them off into the oven for a while.

I chose to cook the seeds for about 15 hours at 150F. I did test them after 12 hours, and then frequently (every half hour) until the perfect crunch came in at the 15 hour mark .

This method of low temperature, long duration preserves the enzymes that help digestion and are basically just good for you in every way.

Let me tell you, they taste AMAZING…

If you want seeds faster, you can skip soaking them and cook them at about 350F for 35 minutes. Yummy either way!

So, here’s the breakdown:

1. Gut the pumpkin and separate the seeds

2. Rinse and soak the seeds in salted water for 3hrs

3. Strain the water and pat the seeds dry

4. Evenly spread seeds on an oiled sheet pan and season (I used salt & chili powder)

5. Bake at 150F for 12-15 hours (test for crunchiness along the way)

6. ENJOY!

Hope that one day us humans will fully understand the tremendous impact we have on the natural world in which we are blessed to live– and make a healthy, positive change; and heartache for the fact that our planet is also crying out, like the mermaids, for healing, care, and stewardship.

Authentic Activism

The text a few lines below is from a conversation in one of the groups I am in, which is populated by some highly educated people who I have seen to possess fairly valiant hearts. Each wants to contribute to making our planet healthier, and Humanity happier. Our conversations frequently examine activism.

This most recent one had me thinking about all the different voices in the world using Causes to drive Companies, rather than Companies to drive change within Culture.

Healthy change will always come down to an embrace of Authenticity and Honesty.

Here is my response in our conversation

The issue will always be one of sustainable systems investment. I am not sure, but it really seems to me that the more I learn about the earth and the solar system and then deeper, how it all functions in an inter-related manner, the greater the comprehension of my own ignorance becomes.

That being said, I find myself disagreeing with Morton in a number of ways.

My wife’s company, Betty Belts, makes jewelry with it. We use the profit from that company to drive change in a number of arenas.

This is part of a campaign we used to help Blue Mind below. We gave each Researcher a Mermaid tear which was sown into an origami whale as the whale’s eye. This copy was written inside the whale. By touching the Scientist, we support the Science. People must understand that they matter, in order for us to progress as a species.

Why Mermaids Cry.

Tears: essence of life, salt water droplets, carrying our Joy, Sadness, Pain, Compassion and Gratitude.

They matter to those who shed them, and to those who view them.

The Mermaid Tear is the refuse of civilization thrown into the sea, shaped by her, and placed into the hands of ocean loving beach combers.

It is an Ocean talisman symbolizing both question and answer.

How do we create a healthier happier planet?

By caring enough about the Ocean to wear the Mermaid’s Tear as a reminder to act with compassion and intelligence.

It is our prayer that one day, there will be no more tears. Then the Mermaid Tear will be something handed down to the children, a symbol of a time when we cared enough to be the change.

I make this smoothie before school, surfing, or any daily activities in the morning because it is simple, quick, easy and well… I’m usually in a little rush and can drink it in the car ride to school or wherever. It wakes me up and fuels me for the morning. I’ll even make a small batch after a run or surf sesh while I’m cooking a more filling, late breakfast so that I still get fruits and veggie in my diet. It’s also a nice treat to just take to the beach!

 Try this green goodness yourself!

Literally it’s as simple as one, two, three …then just add water.

The three ingredients are:

1. Frozen Mango

2. Fresh Spinach

3. Frozen Pineapple

Buy the largest bags of each ingredient from your local market so you’re always stocked up. Throw in a handful of mango, a handful of spinach, a handful of pineapple, and pour in a little coconut water (or filtered water) to get things blending easier. There you have it, an easy and very delicious green smoothie. You can add more or less, somewhat equal parts of each ingredient to make more or less quantity. If you want to get wild, throw in an apple or even a banana to mellow out the tangy fruit flavors.

*Tip: Put spinach in between layers of fruit so it gets blended into the smoothie better than if it were to sit up on top.
